Consistency is a marker of a healthy and peaceful life.
While we often think life is made up of these big, exciting, mountain-top moments, in reality, life is really made up of the small and sometimes monotonous things we need to do on a regular basis. It’s made up of everyday moments, like drinking coffee, folding laundry, and paying bills.
When you change your mindset and see regular things as a chance to strive for consistency, you may be surprised how much happiness you can find.
So how can we approach our home and our lives with the lens of consistency?
Consider laundry—when you don’t do it regularly, it piles up and gets out of hand pretty quick (which I totally understand and it happens to me all the time still)—life happens and that’s okay, it just isn’t very sustainable.
I think it’s time to stop treating chores and mundane moments as if they’re the exception. There’s no band-aid fix for making these things disappear—laundry will always be there.
Yes, we can (and should!) simplify our wardrobes and our laundry routine, but we need to accept the fact that if we faithfully and consistently do these things, we’ll find peace, joy, and abundant life right there in the small things.
Let’s Get Practical
It’s easy to say we’ll be consistent—that we’ll do things with a smile on our faces, but it’s another to be deep in the trenches of a stressful week and trying to do this.
Here are a few of my thoughts:
Take A Couple Deep Breaths
Deep breathing relaxes your body and mind. It can also help clear your mind if you’re feeling negative about the task you’re about to do.
Be Present
Sometimes being present is boring—and that’s okay! Like I said earlier, not every moment has to be an exciting one. Remember the why behind what you’re doing, and take a moment to be grateful for whatever you get to do.
Add Some Fun
Make something mundane more enjoyable—light a candle, put on music, and find what makes these tasks happier for you.
Create Habits and Rhythms
Create habits and rhythms that help you stay consistent. Reducing the effort needed to continually do these things will allow you to do them more smoothly.
