Getting My House In Order

Life is always chaotic after a move. Ours has felt especially that way lately – we moved into our new build with a toddler when I was 7 months pregnant and planned to do a lot of the finish work ourselves and with the help of family members.

It’s been a happy chaos – we’ve been so excited to move into this home and so blessed to start creating memories in this space. We wasted no time hosting family members, extended family, birthday parties, cozy suppers, and coffee dates with friends.

Living in the unfinished and imperfect has been good for me. My type-A personality needs a little spontaneity and reason to step back every now and again.

Now that we’re settling into a new season and developing more routines and rhythms in this space with our toddler and newborn, I feel the need to get this space under control.

Let me give you a quick little breakdown of what we’re dealing with:

We moved all of our stuff from our small 722 sq ft home into this new space. We also had items in storage at both of our parents’ homes (many of which had been in storage for 2-3 years…yikes!)

The chaos of bringing everything back under one roof, especially with many spaces in our new home unfinished, has meant that many items don’t have a home or have been shuffled between different places, so we don’t always know where everything is located!

The irony isn’t lost on me that my blog is focused on minimalism and yet here I am going against a lot of my advice and in a space that’s definitely not in a simplistic state.

But I want to share the journey of getting our house in order with you in all the steps and seasons it goes through.

I’ve always loved the phrase, “Get your house in order.”

I love the idea of simplifying life and my home to bring order to the chaos. The idea of having my life orderly to focus on what truly matters is why I wanted to start this blog in the first place!

My hope is to share the spaces I simplify, the processes I use to simplify, what I’m learning, and what I declutter along the way. This isn’t a prescription for what you need to live with or without, but a guidepost that might inspire you to look at your home differently and get it in order.

The goal of each space will be twofold:

  1. To simplify the space

This includes gathering all relevant inventory for that room into one area, going through it and decluttering what’s unneeded.

  1. To make the space functional for its purpose

Part of wrangling this chaos and getting our house in order means we need each room to serve a certain purpose. Living in our space for the past few months has allowed us to see what we actually need from each space and which items need to be where in order to accommodate our routines and rhythms.

We’re not striving for perfection in each space – this unfortunately won’t be like the beautiful before and after DIYs you find on the internet (although I do love watching those!), but a realistic look at what these spaces look like currently and how we’re using what we have to make them work for us. At the end of sharing about each space, I’ll also share what our vision for it is, and the ongoing progress we’re hoping to make.

Thanks for coming along on the journey!
