This post is a little different than some I’ve written before, but I’ve found that a simple approach to planning makes any experience or event much more intentional and joy-filled.
Here’s my process from start to finish that I use to plan kids’ parties:
Decide On The Basics
The first 3 things to consider?
- Theme
- Date and time
- Location
This is always where I start. Consider what vibe or style of party you want—a large gathering with lots of friends and kiddos? A small gathering with just a few people? Either is great, but it’s important to nail this down early, so you don’t get lost in the weeds later in the planning process.
Gather Inspiration
I always start a Pinterest board of inspiration for the party theme to get a better idea of what I’m hoping to create. It’s quick, easy, and you can share the board or keep it private!
Make Your To-Do List
Create a physical list or a note on your phone with the things you need to figure out and by what day. Here are some helpful categories I usually put in mine:
- Guest List
- Invites
- Decor
- Food
- Activities
Showcase Memories
Last year we had an outdoor party and I hung up a bunch of the photos I had printed for photo albums from the previous year—it was a really fun way for guests to see some of the memories and photos they wouldn’t have otherwise seen!
This year, I think I’ll put together a short video compilation of funny photos and videos of our son from the past year. Whatever you decide to do, remember the heart behind the idea—it doesn’t need to be complicated, it’s just a fun way to celebrate your kiddo’s past year!
Some Additional Helpful Tips
I prefer to keep kids’ parties budget-friendly, so we always look for creative ways to save money. Here are a few things we do:
Decor
Check your local buy-and-sell groups, free groups, your thrift store, or with friends and family to see if they have what you’re looking for. My aunt has a ton of scrapbooking and old teaching supplies and recently gave us some tractor-themed decor that we’ll be using this year.
I also try to find ways to use toys, stuffed animals, or decor I already own as decor for an event—it’s a fun challenge to try using something in a new way!
Invites
You can keep this as simple as you’d like or get a little creative with it! Canva has many cute and free options, or you can take a photo of your kiddo and add text over top with the party details, or just text your guest list the information!
Food
Food doesn’t need to break the bank! Consider forgoing gifts and asking guests to do a potluck and bring something to share.
Gifts
Our kiddo is a young toddler so we like to keep it extra simple with gifts. Usually, we consider the party the gift or get him a book and an item to open on the day of the party. I like to shop thrift stores or buy-and-sell groups! We also like giving gifts that are experiences instead of physical items and food items that he can enjoy on the day of.
Favors
This is a common thing for kids’ parties, but one I’m not a personal fan of because it creates some extra cost and junk sitting around the house. If you do want to do a favor bag, consider including snacks that the guests/other kiddos can enjoy during or after the party.
If you want a little more help with where to start and planning out your kiddo’s party, I’ve created a guide and checklist resource that you can find here: https://prairieminimalistca.etsy.com
Cut the stress and let’s get to planning!
